Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm vs L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte

Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm vs L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte

I thought I’d post a comparison of two new drugstore matte lipsticks: Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm and L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte. Here’s how they stack up:

Packaging

  • Both products are packaged as twist-up pencils. Revlon’s is more of a jumbo pencil (its packaging is identical to that of ColorStay Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain) and L’Oreal’s is slimmer (it looks a lot like Kardashian Beauty’s Joystick Lip Lacquer).
  • WINNER: L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte. Its slim pencil comes to a finer point that makes precision application easier.

Fragrance

  • Revlon’s Matte Balm has a distinct minty flavor and scent. L’Oreal Le Matte has a classic perfumey fragrance common to cosmetics products.
  • WINNER: Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm. This one is really a matter of personal preference, but I would imagine that fewer people will be offended by the minty fragrance of Revlon’s Matte Balm.

Pigmentation

  • The pigmentation of Revlon’s matte lipstick seems to vary by shade. Of the four I tested, two are very pigmented and two are more sheer. Although one of the L’Oreal shades I tested was a bit less pigmented than the others, they’re all slightly more opaque than Revlon’s formula .
  • WINNER: L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte.

Finish

  • L’Oreal’s formula is a flattering matte that doesn’t accentuate dryness or fine lines. Revlon’s formula depends on the shade: some give flattering, even coverage and others make dry spots and fine lines much more apparent.
  • WINNER: L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte.

Formula and application

  • L’Oreal’s formula is creamier and does a better job moisturizing than Revlon’s, which is supposed to offer balm-like hydration.
  • WINNER: L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte; Revlon’s formula doesn’t deliver on its claims.

Shade Selection

  • Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm is available in ten shades, L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte is available in four.
  • WINNER: Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm.

Price

  • Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm retails for $8.99; L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte costs $8.00.
  • WINNER: Very close, but the L’Oreal is a little more affordable.

Availability

  • L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte is a limited edition product. It’s relatively hard to find in stores and very hard to find online (I’ve had luck with Ebay). It’s much easier to get your hands on Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm, which isn’t limited edition. You can find it at Ulta for $8.99.
  • WINNER: Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm.

And the Winner is…

L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte has a better formula because it’s more forgiving (it doesn’t accentuate dry spots and fine lines). Although I appreciate its shade range and that fact that it’s more widely available, Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm is disappointing because it doesn’t offer the balm-like hydration it claims to.

I actually prefer Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm.

The Revlon formula is definitely nice…I just wish it were a little more moisturizing! I do love the shade selection though!
