I’ve had basically the same skin care routine for years. It’s kept my acne more or less under control, but my skin always seemed kind of irritated–my face looked pretty red without makeup. I wanted to try using gentler products in order to give my skin a break, but I was worried my acne would go crazy if I stopped using salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide every day.
I’d seen Tatcha on QVC a few times and was intrigued by the brand. Their four step ritual is based on the centuries-old traditions of Japan’s geisha and takes a less is more approach to skin care…exactly what I was looking for!

I decided to try Tatcha’s Ritual Discovery Kit, which costs $59.00, to see how my skin reacted before purchasing any full-sized products. The discovery kit comes in four configurations: one for normal and combination skin types, one for dry skin, one for sensitive skin, and one for oily skin (which is what I purchased). It comes with trial-sized packages of each of the four steps in Tatcha’s skin care ritual:
Claims: “A beautiful blend of camellia and rice bran oils. Melts away even waterproof makeup leaving skin fresh and pure. Does not contain mineral oil. No double cleansing required. All skin types. Non-irritating. Non-sensitizing. Dermatologist tested.”
How it works for me: I’ve never been the biggest fan of oil cleansers, but this one leaves my skin looking and feeling balanced, not greasy. I generally only use this at night to take off my makeup. I still end up using eye makeup remover afterwards to remove traces of waterproof mascara, but I can live with that since it removes the rest of my makeup with ease.
Claims: “A water-activated enzyme powder of rice bran, papaya + HADASEI-3 Bioactive Complex. Reveals skin’s natural gleam. Exfoliates without harsh abrasives for effortless baby-soft skin. Non-irritating. Non-sensitizing. Dermatologist tested.”
How it works for me: This comes in three formulas: Gentle for dry/sensitive skin, Classic for normal/combination skin, and Deep for oily/acne-prone skin. I’ve tried all three and I love the Classic and Deep formulas–Deep is great for my oily skin now that it’s summer, but I’ll probably use Classic during the winter months. I didn’t expect this to work as well as my beloved Paula’s Choice exfoliants, but it totally does. My skin feels super soft and doesn’t look or feel irritated.
Claims: “A brightening serum of time-tested Asian botanicals + HADASEI-3 Bioactive Complex for radiant looking skin. Hydrates while making the skin appear more luminous. All Skin Types. Non-irritating. Non-sensitizing. Dermatologist tested.”
How it works for me: I haven’t been using this long enough to tell whether my skin looks brighter or more radiant, but it seems to glow right after I apply this. I really love the lightweight feel and finish of this serum. Look out for a more comprehensive review of this (and the other products mentioned here) in the next few weeks!
Claims: “Luxurious yet weightless feeling gel-cream of Liquid Silk, Squalane, Royal Jelly + HADASEI-3 Bioactive Complex. Long-lasting anti-aging moisturizer without heavy oils. Ideal for oily and normal/combination skin. Non-irritating. Non-sensitizing.”
How it works for me: This is the cream that comes with the Ritual Discovery Kit for normal, oily, and sensitive skin types (AGELESS Enriching Renewal Cream (below) is included in the kit for dry skin). I love this! It might be the only moisturizer I’ve used that is actually suitable for oily skin. It feels lightweight and doesn’t leave me looking or feeling greasy. Foundation applies really nicely over it, too.
Claims: “Our intensive renewal cream provides deep anti-aging benefits and promotes microcirculation to reduce age spots and renew appearance. The effective formula harnesses proven ingredients that work in harmony to promote microcirculation, preventing and reversing the signs of premature aging. Ideal for dry skin.”
How it works for me: This moisturizer comes with the Ritual Discovery Kit for dry skin, so I haven’t personally tested it. You can find customer reviews here.
I’ve been following Tatcha’s ritual every day for a month now, and I’m pleasantly surprised by the results. I’m still getting occasional hormonal acne, but it’s definitely no worse than before. And my skin doesn’t look irritated all the time anymore! My skin is fair and still has some redness in it, but I think that’s probably always going to be the case. I usually skip the cleansing oil in the morning and use all four steps at night. My only complaint is that Tatcha’s line doesn’t contain any SPF products at the moment. It’s a pricey skin care system, but I love how simple and non-irritating it is. I’d absolutely recommend this starter kit!
